April 17, 2025

Ozona—A public dedication ceremony commemorating a plaque from the Alamo Letter Society will be held at the town square by the Davy Crockett Statue at 2:30 p.m. on Apr. 22.

The ceremony will feature guest speaker Errol Flannery, the fourth great-grandson of Davy Crockett. There will also be county officials and students from Ozona High School and Ozona Middle School in attendance. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Crockett Room. The public is invited to attend.

The plaque will be located at the Davy Crockett Statue in the town square park and feature the wording “Victory or Death: Alamo Letter Society, I Shall Never Surrender or Retreat.”

The plaque comes from the Alamo Letter Society.

So far, 19 counties have held dedication ceremonies for these plaques, including Reeves County (Pecos), Gillespie County (Fredericksburg), Howard County (Big Spring), and Andrews County.

The "Victory or Death" letter was written on Feb. 24, 1836 and was dispatched through the Mexican Army to General Sam Houston by Captain Albert Martin.

The non-profit organization also honors Navarro and Sequin, who were loyal Tejanos that fought for Texas Independence.
