Angelo State Golf Complex officially opens
April 03, 2025
San Angelo—Angelo State University hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on Mar. 28 for its first-ever dedicated intercollegiate golf facility, the Angelo State Golf Complex, located off South Jackson Street on the far east side of the campus.
Funded by an anonymous donor, the $5.2 million complex includes a state-of-the-art, 3,600-square-foot building, an extensive patio area and an outdoor short-game golf course. The building houses golf training areas, including swing simulators and hitting bays, as well as locker rooms, offices, restrooms and a 1,420-square-foot general-use area that includes a golf simulator. The general-use area also has fold-up doors that look out onto a large, covered patio, additional uncovered patio space and the short-game golf course.
The short-game course features synthetic turf, six greens and real sand bunkers. The farthest green is 175 yards from the tee line, with the remaining greens at varying distances up to 125 yards. It was designed by Weibring Wolfard Golf Design in Plano and was built by Houston-based Greenscapes Six and Dallas-based Premier Greens.
The Angelo State Golf Complex provides an on-campus facility for the ASU Rambelles golf team to train daily in all the different facets of their game, including driving, chipping and putting. The general-use area can also be used to host other campus events.
"We're ecstatic to open this new complex that also opens up a whole new world of opportunities for the Rambelles golf team," James Reid, ASU athletic director, said. "Our golfers no longer have to share facilities or leave campus to work on any aspect of their sport, and that will be a tremendous benefit to both the student-athletes and coaches. The golf team has a real home now, where its members can hone their skills and have an ownership stake in the program. It will also help us in our recruiting efforts for the Rambelles golfers of the future."
Securing funding to support new and enhanced campus facilities for both academics and athletics is one of the top priorities of ASU's ongoing "Leading the Charge" capital campaign.
"Angelo State has now added golf to the list of our intercollegiate sports that have some of the best athletics facilities in all of NCAA Division II," Ronnie Hawkins Jr., ASU president, said. "We are incredibly grateful to our anonymous donor who funded the construction of this top-tier facility, because the Angelo State Golf Complex will have a dynamic impact on our golf program, the campus, and especially our student-athletes, both now and for generations to come."
The Rambelles golf team debuted in 2007. It is currently in the 2025 season leading up to the Lone Star Conference Championship in April.
