SWCD reviews last year’s events

February 13, 2025

Crockett County—The Crockett County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) would like to review its 2024 activities.

The SWCD sponsored the annual 6th Grade Conservation Poster Contest. The theme for 2024 was ‘May the Forest Be With You Always.’ Yoda found its way onto several posters for the event. The Ozona Bank sponsored this activity and displayed the winning posters in their lobby. The winners were Jordana Perez (1st place), Atli Oglesby (2nd place), and Shae Everett (3rd place).

Jack & Jodie Baggett hosted the 35th annual 6th Grade Field Day in October at their ranch. The weather was great, and it was a fun day. The directors cooked and cooked some more to keep up with the appetites. There were 48 students and an overall attendance of about 85. Students and adults enjoyed the educational information. The students were active participants, and they learned a lot. The SWCD appreciates the teachers for their support and for arranging schedules to fit these events into their schedules.

Stewardship week was April 28-May 5, 2024. This National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) has been an annual program since 1955. It is one of the nation’s most significant initiatives dedicated to promoting the conservation of natural resources. It occurs annually between the last Sunday in April and the first Sunday in May. It is a reminder that we each bear the responsibility to safeguard and preserve our natural resources.

The SWCD vice-chairman, Jack Baggett Jr, was recognized at the 84th Annual State Meeting for 25 years of dedication and service to soil and water conservation.

The Crockett County SWCD and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) work closely to provide landowners services, information, and education. Due to the partnership and programs, payments of $1,717,006.59 were received in Crockett County in 2024 to promote good stewardship practices that help conserve and restore our natural resources.

The SWCD board of directors includes Paul Perner, III (Chairman), Jack Baggett, Jr (Vice-Chairman), Pleas Childress, III (Secretary), Ira Childress (Director), and Ty Allen (Director). The office is in the USDA/NRCS building located at 201-D 11th St.; the phone number is 325-392-3702 Ext 3. If you have land and need help, please stop by to see what resources are available to help you practice good stewardship by considering natural resources.
