After mortally wounding his wife, George D. Brieger, prescription clerk for Smith’s Drug Store here. Early Sunday evening turned a small automatic pistol on himself and sent a bullet thru his heart, dying instantly. The shooting occurred at the Brieger home in the presence of the only daughter of the couple, Mrs. Theron Cook and her husband. Immediately after the shooting Mrs. Brieger was rushed to a San Angelo hospital in Robert Massie Co. ambulance where an operation was performed in an effort to save her life. The bullet lodged in her spine just back of the abdomen and she died about midnight Monday. The shooting took place a few minutes after Mrs. Brieger had returned from the First Baptist church where she was organist.
Mr. and Mrs. Cook had also returned from church and while the three were in a room together, Mr. Brieger walked into the room with his hand behind his back, said goodnight to his daughter and turning fired at Mrs. Brieger who was seated. As Mrs. Brieger fell, her daughter ran to her as the father fired a second shot, which went wild. Brieger then pressed the gun to his chest and pulled the trigger. Ill health and despondency are believed to have been contributing causes of the tragedy. The family had lived here about three years.

Armistice Day, Wednesday of next week, will be observed here by a holiday for school children and the closing of many of the city's places of business during the day. For local football fans it will be a trek to Sonora where the Ozona High School Lions are slated to meet the Sonora Bronchs in a district conflict. The game will be called at 2 30 on the Sutton County field, and the school band and Pep Squad and a large contingent of rooters will accompany the team.
Observance of Armistice Day in the schools will take the form of a four act play appropriated to the occasion, to be presented in the High School auditorium Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. This Armistice Day program will supplant the regular Thursday afternoon assembly, it was announced. The public is cordially invited to this special program. The play, "America Rembers” will be presented by the History department of the High School, under the direction of Principal C.E. Nelson.

A committee named by the Community Council to study the proposal for construction of a church for the colored people of Ozona was instructed at the Monday night session of the Council to secure estimates on the cost of construction and to report back at the next meeting. The committee reported that it was considering the possibility of making an effort to buy a chapel from one of the Army installations in Texas that have been declared surplus or of undertaking to build the church of concrete tile. Estimates will be secured on the latter type of building approximately 35 by 60 feet in size.

Records of the previous two years in which the drive has been conducted were broken last night when a total of $167 was collected by “Trick or Treat” solicitors on behalf of the UNICEF fund for sick and needy children through-out the world. The drive was sponsored by the Junior High division of the Methodist Youth Fellowship, joined by guests from other churches and the Community Center youth. The amount collected here, which will be doubled by the governments of nations receiving the aid, will be sufficient to provide milk to 1,500 children for a week.
