Ozona and Sonora — Ozona and Sonora earned victories Friday, Oct. 30, in District 4-2A Division I football action, with the Broncos securing at least a share of the district championship and the district’s No. 1 playoff seed.

Ozona defeats Reagan County

The Ozona Lions defeated the Reagan County Owls 34-16 at home.

“It was a slow start,” Coach Jason Pitts said. “We got stopped on the first drive. Let them score, so we come back from behind, but these kids don’t quit. They just keep kicking away, and they trust the process.”

Ozona will travel to Ballinger for its regular-season finale.

Sonora wins overtime thriller

The Sonora Broncos defeated the Ballinger Bearcats 42-41 in overtime at Bronco Stadium, improving to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in district. Ballinger fell to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in district.

Sonora led 34-13 late in the third quarter before Ballinger rallied to force overtime.

The Bearcats scored first in the extra period on a touchdown pass from Wyatt Clemens to Hunter Peacock. Peacock’s extra point gave Ballinger a seven-point lead.

Sonora answered with a touchdown pass from Aaron Segura to Wyatt Killough. The Broncos then went for the win, with Segura connecting with Evan Arredondo for the decisive two-point conversion.

Other district action

Christoval defeated Forsan 33-13.

District results:

  • Ozona 34, Reagan County 16.
  • Sonora 42, Ballinger 41
  • Christoval 33, Forsan 13.

Championship and playoff picture

Sonora’s victory secured the No. 1 playoff seed. The Broncos can claim the district title outright with a victory at Forsan in the regular-season finale.

Ballinger will host Ozona with an opportunity to secure the No. 2 playoff seed. A Ballinger loss, combined with a Forsan victory over Sonora, would create a three-way tie for second place involving Ballinger, Ozona and Forsan.
