Aug. 20, 1936
Sheriff W. S. Willis of Crockett County was notified by long distance telephone about 3 o’clock this morning to be on the lookout for two cars of hijackers who held up a whiskey package store on the San Angelo-Mertzon road a few miles out of San Angelo earlier in the night. The hijackers secured a quantity of liquor and about $11 in cash from the store’s cash register, after binding the storekeeper, the local officers were informed. A watch was kept here until daylight, but no trace of the bandit cars was found.

Prospects for a new motion picture theatre building for Ozona became a step nearer realization this week with the announcement by W. V. Adwell of San Angelo, owner of the Ozona Theater, of the purchase of the Will Miller residence property adjoining the Hotel Ozona on the north as the site for a new theater building. The building plan is another in the dammed up expansion program for Ozona which needs only the return of plentiful supplies of building materials and labor to assume flood proportions in the construction of new residences and business buildings.

Announcement by the selection committee of the Miss Wool Contest that Miss Wanda Carden of Ozona has been named one of the eleven finalists in the contest was received here this week. For the fifth year, a wool queen will be selected in San Angelo, wool center of the world, to represent the wool industry in the nation’s fashion centers, and most particularly in the State of Texas.

At a joint meeting of the Crockett County Commissioners Court and directors of the Crockett County Water Control and Improvement District last Friday, Kent Johnston, county geologist, gave a comprehensive report of ground-water conditions in Crockett County, with particular reference to sources of pollution of the underground supply. Large areas of the county’s groundwater have been polluted over the years and the creeping pollution of other areas suggests need for specific action to halt such pollution.

CRANKING UP FOR THE LIONS ROAR- Kitty Montgomery takes time out to make some suggestions for the Ozona High School newspaper, THE LIONS ROAR, which will be a part of the Ozona Stockman until the end of school. John Henderson, editor-in-chief, will be assisted by Helen Bunger and two other senior girls not pictured, Hope Phillips and Carmen Delgado. The first issue will be published next week.
