August 6, 1936
Fire, believed to have started from a pile of burning trash nearby, destroyed a rent house owned by Mrs. Mae Gray west of the Johnson Draw on Tuesday night. The residence, a duplex apartment, is occupied by Emmett Sapp and a Mr. Howard and family. An old model car belonging to Mr. Howard and stored in the garage, was also destroyed. The fire was beyond control when neighbors discovered the blaze in the early morning hours.

Officials of the Crockett County Fair Association were making final preparations this week for the 1946 annual celebration slated for Saturday and Sunday, August 17 and 18. A fresh string of Brahma caIves for use in the roping events was unloaded at the fair grounds this week. The two-day show will get underway Saturday afternoon, with the Sunday afternoon show expected to attract a large crowd of visitors from all parts of West Texas. Featured events of the two-day show include jackpot ropings, team tying contests, girls’ flag and barrel races, a boys’ calf roping event and boys’ calf riding. A cutting horse contest, a new event so far as Ozona shows are concerned, is to be another feature of the daily program.

Billy Mills, for four years a deputy on the staff of Sheriff V. 0. Earnest, emerged victorious in a race to unseat his former boss in the Democratic primary here last Saturday, which, incidentally, set a new total vote record of 1,324 for this county. Mills won nomination by a margin of 190 votes, polling a total of 754 votes to 564 for Earnest.

COUPLA BIG ONES that didn’t get way. These beauties were caught in Devil’s River by a group of Ozona anglers on a recent sortie. The big one on the left, held by Mrs. Monroe Smith, weighed 35 pounds while Mrs. Eddie Crutchfield holds the “little fellow” that weighed 27 pounds. Both are yellow cats. The fishing party, composed of Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Crutchfield, Mr. and Mrs. Hensill Matthews of Sonora and Mr. and Mrs. James Smith, caught a dozen or more smaller fish, 10 to 15 pounders, and a number of small ones.
