Gaines Coates Teague

June 08, 2026

Gaines Coates Teague, 73 years old passed away on May 31, 2026.
Gaines was born July 25, 1952 in Mercy Hospital in Slaton Texas to Joe Hinton Teague III and Bettie Lou Teague (nee Coates). He died from complications of ALS.
Gaines got into a bit of trouble growing up in Slaton but he made it out OK. There are probably a few folks that remember him blowing up mailboxes with M80s, where he learned that mailboxes are US government property and they don’t like them destroyed. That was a good lesson.
After his mother died in 1961, he spent his summers and Christmas vacations in Ozona, Texas where his mom was born into a ranching family. Those summers were some of the best times of his life, and he has many friends from Ozona. His family still ranches there today.
He attended Texas Tech University twice. The first time, he dropped out and moved to Dallas and lived with his father's sister Myrtle and worked at Dixico for 4 years. After that, he returned to Texas Tech and graduated with a degree in Chemistry. He worked for one year at the UT medical school in San Antonio and then returned to college and got a degree in computer science at UTSA and worked as a programmer for the next 35 years, mostly for Compaq and HP.
He had several jobs along the way including selling shoes door to door in small towns around Lubbock.
Gaines was married three times, to women who were much better than he deserved: Janice Buxkemper, Chris Robinson, and Patricia Williams, who is his current wife. Gaines considered himself one of the luckiest guys ever for having three good wives. The wives were not so lucky, but that’s the way it goes.
He also has three stepchildren, Nicole Savage, Chris Williams and Josh Williams who are among the great joys of his life.
Gaines was preceded in death by his parents, and dear friend Gregory Stuart of Ozona.
He is survived by his wife, stepchildren, and many dear friends, including Dennis Rushing, Billy Joe King, Allan Sanders, Gary Dillard, and Mark Luna. He was very lucky to have had these people as a part of his life, along with many others!
He is also survived by several cousins: Karen Huffman, Fleet Coates, Cookie Worthington and Marilee Saegert all of Ozona and Hughie Coates of Matagorda Bay.
There will be a gravesite ceremony on June 13, 2026 at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Ozona Texas. He would like to thank Chesta and Rod Schneider, some of his oldest and dearest friends for making this happen! Everyone is invited!
In lieu of flowers, donations to a local food bank are appreciated. People in the USA should not be hungry.
When asked to say something interesting about his life, he just grunted.
