Texas Independence Day, the 100th anniversary of the declaration of independence of Texas from Mexico, will be observed as a holiday by local schools next Monday, Superintendent C.S. Denham announced yesterday. Appropriate Texas Day exercises are to be held at the chapel hour in the auditorium this afternoon, the first assembly program since the outbreak of the mumps epidemic in the local school system. The complete program had not been outlined but will include readings by Billy Jo West and Eloise Carson and Texas songs by a quartet composed of Jeanetta Willis, Ora Louise Cox, Adelia Willis and Janice Watts.

Texas’ Centennial of Statehood, being observed throughout the state during the month of February, was fittingly observed by the Ozona Rotary Club at its luncheon Tuesday of this week when Judge Houston Smith recounted for members the interesting story of the ten-year struggle for annexation which followed the battle of San Jacinto and freedom from Mexican domination.

MRS. ABBIE ANDREWS, widely known home economist, will demonstrate the newest in electric cookery at a cooking school sponsored by the West Texas Utilities Co. and the Frigidaire Corporation in Ozona Wednesday, Feb. 29. The school will be held in the new-car showroom of the Tallaferro Garage.

PTA Youths of the Month are Esther Williams and Rex Bland, it was announced last Monday night at the regular monthly meeting. Esther, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Williams, is a junior at OHS. She is a cheerleader and manager of the girls basketball team. A member of the student council, she is secretary-elect for that group and will assume the duties of that office when school reopens in the fall. She is active in the M Y F of the Methodist Church.
Rex, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Bland, is also a junior and a member of the basketball and football teams of OHS. He is vice-president of the Senior 4-H, Club president of the 4-H Rifle Club and president of the 4-H Horse Club. He was Gold Star Boy for 1965. He is a member of the FFA judging team and was chosen basketball girls’ beau for the year
