Joey, 68, of Ozona, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on February 15, 2026.
Joey was born in Ozona in 1957 to Elizabeth Pearson and Joe (Joe Boy) Pierce IV. He grew up in Ozona, Austin, and Ohio. He graduated from Ozona High School in 1976. He attended the University of Texas at El Paso for a year before deciding to travel and work different jobs. Later in life, he attended Odessa College and earned his Associate’s Degree in Welding. Then enrolled in Texas A&M to continue his education in Engineering.
He married the love of his life, Luann Perner, on September 6, 1980. Joey and Luann were married for 45 years. They loved spending time together and with family.
Joey was a lifelong rancher. He loved being at the ranch and taking care of his livestock. He raised commercial goats but his passion was his Beefmaster cattle herd. Joey was an expert on many types of windmills and could repair anything at the ranch. He took pride in keeping his ranches in excellent condition.
Joey loved the outdoors. He enjoyed road tripping around the U.S. and traveling the world. He went on many hunting trips in Idaho, Alaska, and Colorado. Canoeing and kayaking the Pecos River was one of his favorite trips to make at least once a year. He was also a pilot and flew his Cessna any chance he could.
Joey enjoyed collecting antique rifles and attending gun shows. He shared his knowledge and appreciation of Winchester rifles with friends and family. He had all the equipment to reload any cartridge he needed. His daughters enjoyed helping him reload cartridges and learning about firearms from him.
One of Joey’s favorite places to spend time was his ranch outside of Sanderson, Texas. He liked to entertain family and friends there and take them on expeditions around the property. He hunted many mule deer and trapped mountain lions and other predators. In recent years, the elk population has surged on the ranch. He enjoyed feeding and showing off his elk herd, but nobody was allowed to hunt them.
Joey was a wonderful dad and grandfather. He had 3 daughters: Marie, Laura, and Rebecca. He didn’t hesitate to teach his girls about hunting, fishing, camping, and ranching. He encouraged and supported them to travel and continue their education .
Joey is survived by his wife, Luann, and his children, Marie Williams and husband Daun; Laura Phipps and husband Turner; and Rebecca Vergara and husband Miguel; grandchildren, Grey, Ella, Pierce, Jackson, and Evie; brother, Chris Thornton and wife Tiffany, and their children Elizabeth and Jacob; sister-in-law, Louise Ledoux; uncle, Don Pearson and his children Robin and Ginna.
